December Tech Salon in New York: Mobiles + Art + Activism

Posted by anoushrima on Nov 20, 2010

Have you ever texted a fish? Or graffitied a wall with your mobile?

Thanks to the ever-present mobile devices and connectivity, artists and activists are experimenting with how we interact with each other, organize ourselves, and our surroundings.

We've written about interactive texts messages in activism before, and are very excited to devote our December Tech Salon to how artists and activists use mobile phones for expression.

RSVP here to join us on Thursday December 9th for "Mobiles + Art + Activism": an evening of conversation with artists, and live demos & exhibits of mobile art projects exploring public spaces, calls to action, crowd engagement and participation.

Projects & artists to be showcased include:

  • TXTUAL HEALING (Paul Notzold) - TXTual Healing contextualizes text messaging into user generated story telling, whether in public space or as an indoor installation.
  • URBAN SPEAKER (Carlos J. Gomez de Llarena) - Urban Speaker is an art installation that transforms public space into an instant stage for mass communication. This portable urban furniture allows people to broadcast their voice in public by calling in from their mobile phones.
  • AMPHIBIOUS ARCHITECTURE (Natalie Jeremijenko) - An installation project along the East and the Bronx Rivers, which allowed passers by to interact with the wildlife in those habitats through interactive light sensors in the water and SMS messages.
  • SMS SLINGSHOT (VR/Urban) - The SMS Slingshot installation features a handheld digital slingshot device for spreading information on public screens.

Mobile Tech Salons are a regular gathering of people passionate about mobile technology for social change. Motto:  We bring the drinks - you bring your projects, passions, tools, and conversation!
