About Me
About me... mmmm... so, my name is Oscar, I´m communications director on Greenpeace in Argentina. Before I worked as a campaigner on agriculture issues in the same NGO. I am 31 years old, I live alone in Buenos Aires (since september 1999). I left my hometown (Santiago del Estero, 1200 km at northwest of Buenos Aires) to work in this organization. Prior to these jobs in Greenpeace, I worked in the regional media in the northwest of Argentina (my initial profession is a journalist, because I studied Communications and journalism). I worked as a journalist and in my free times I was worked ad honorem with the local comunities in the social and rural projects in the region. The local people (specially peasants) have demanded the legal possesion of the land 50 years ago. With my ex-girlfriend, Marcela, I worked in agriculture issues with the local communities. I also worked in the media for the Justice & Peace Service. I also worked for the environmental service of the catholic church. I was coordinator of the National Cristians Churchs Council in water, agricultural and environmental issues. And it was then when I first got in touch with the transgenic issue. I did not worked intensively only on that issue. Originally I am an environment catholic activist. I'm from Santiago del Estero. It´s the oldest city of Argentina. My province is the most poor in Argentina. The environment of this region is the "Chaco" (very similar to the african Sabana). Is the second ecosystem of South America, after the Amazonia. This semiarid ecosystem is very biodiverse. The fauna and flora specially the latest populations of ´quebracho´ trees are unique in the world, and various species of fauna and flora are near extintion. In my country, the big farmers from the other region of Argentina, the "Pampa húmeda", they want the Chaco's lands... they want to destroy our latest forests and produce transgenic soya. From the beggining, in 1996, we said: "Save the Chaco!". The Greenpeace Argentina people and others locals & nationals NGOs helped us to save the forest and the right of the local people to defend their land (and they still helping and fighting...). And... one day, one friend in Greenpeace, Emiliano, called to me: "Now, we want to you in Greenpeace, we need you". Sooooo... I'm now in the Buenos Aires office, taking a big challenge: inspire people to change the reality, work for a better environment, fight for environmental justice, with a peace and creative way. This is my long story.
