NBC Universal said on Wednesday it would let viewers buy full-length, prime-time television shows such as "The Office" and "Heroes" on-demand to play on mobile phones, a first for the United States.

According to a mobiTV press release, In addition to a robust primetime video-on-demand line-up, the two companies will offer select short form programming from Bravo, SCI FI Channel, USA Network, Telemundo and mun2 on five new ad-supported channels to subscribers, which will debut on the MobiTV® service in second quarter.

Mobile phones key to grandparent-grandchild relationship
A survey by Girlings Retirement Options of over 230 grandchildren has revealed that mobile phones are a key method of communicating with their grandparents. Pocket Picks reports.
"Thirty-three per cent of grandchildren under 21 claimed that they keep in contact with their grandparents via mobile phone, a close second behind fixed line telephones at 40%.
Additionally, 6% communicate using text messages, with letters (10%) and email (9%) also common channels for correspondence.
... Furthermore, when asked if they had ever taught their grandparents a new skill, 37% claimed that they had taught them to use a mobile phone, with 14% also teaching them to send text messages.
EU near deal on cell phone roaming fees
European Union governments are "within reach" of a deal to cut charges for mobile phones calls for cross-border travelers that could be in place before this year's summer vacation, the EU's telecoms chief said Wednesday, reports Business Week.
"The EU's 27 telecoms ministers meet Thursday at the yearly CeBIT technology show in Hanover, Germany, to thrash out an informal agreement that could set an upper limit for how much mobile phone companies can charge customers who use their phone in another EU country -- known as roaming fees.
This could pave the way for the law to be approved in early June, coming into force later that month or in early July."
"The goal of the regulation must be to protect customers from excessive roaming tariffs," said German Economy Minister Michael Glos.
